Hungarian Wire Haired Vizsla

I am taking part in the Country Living Christmas Fair in London this year, and it has motivated me to increase my range of products.

I don’t generally like to use past portrait commissions for prints or products as they are so personal to somebody, so I requested help with sourcing some reference photos on my social media pages. Even though I have lots of Hungarian Vizsla products a Wire Haired Vizsla was missing, and was one of the breeds suggested which I thought was a great idea. Hettie’s mum put forward this great photo to use as a reference.

I started with a simple sketch with a light coloured pastel pencil, then drew over the lines I wanted to keep with a darker colour.

I then put down a layer of ivory coloured pastel pencil and added a few more layers on top to ensure a smooth base. I added the base colours of her eyes, nose and some darker areas of her face.

Once I was sure of the main structure of her face I could add in some detail on the darker areas, leaving the lightest areas to the very end.

After all detail had been added with a pastel pencil, I then used a soft pastel to add in the richest colours.

I am a pet and wildlife artist, originally from Ireland but now based in Frome, England with my husband and children, two rescue dogs Rua the Hungarian Vizsla and Ogie the blind terrier, and Jet the cat. I take commissions for pet portraits and draw original animal art, most of which is sold as fine art prints and art cards. I also teach others how to draw through online classes and short courses available through my website. I have been working as a full time artist for many years, and have fulfilled hundreds of pet portrait commissions. My client base is international, and I ship worldwide for free. My work has been featured in publications such as Dogs Today Magazine, Dogs Monthly, The Guardian, Talented Ladies Club and Country Living Magazine. I support animal charities whenever I can, by regularly donating art to various rescue group fundraisers, donating 20% of income from prints to various breed specific rescues and providing wildlife rescues and rehabilitations centres with original art to fundraise and create merchandise.
